Sometimes, it does not work out. Maybe the hype is more than the game could live up to, or maybe early release leaves too many glitches that just ruin the experience for the players.

Here are the top 5 gaming flops ever!

5. Lawbreakers

Released in 2017 and developed by "Gears of War" creator Cliff Bleszinski and his newly formed studio, BossKey Productions. Lawbreakers was a hero shooter akin to Overwatch. Lawbreakers was originally going to be free to play, but switched to a $29.99 price tag before full release. Big mistake when a free alternative - Overwatch - was already dominating the market. In June 2017, Lawbreakers had a closed beta with 7,500 players, this was down to 3,000 upon full release and less than a moth later dropped to only 1,000 players. Lawbreakers servers shut in 2018.

4. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Released in 2012, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an MMO that was said, by 38 Studios, to rival Warcraft…I know right!?! The studio was set up by Curt Schilling, a professional Baseball player and avid gamer who dreamed of building a gaming studio. He hired big names like author R.A. Salvatore and "Spawn" creator Todd McFarlane. The studio continued to hire and grow, but was burning money spending millions a month. The game was scaled down to a single player RPG. When it finally released, it sold 1.2 million copies and had somewhat decent reviews but had to sell at least 3 million copies just to break even. 38 Studios ended up going bankrupt.

3. Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever was announced by 3D Realms back in 1997, right after 1996's "Duke Nukem 3D established itself as one of the most popular shooters of the time, selling 3.5 million copies. The game was development hell. The developers licensed the Quake II engine for upward of $500,000 in 1997, then switched again months later to use the Unreal engine. Everything they had completed to that point was scrapped and they started again. Eventually, 3D Realms ran out of funding, the studio disbanded and all employees were laid off…and to add insult to injury, the studio Take-Two sued them for breach of contract for failing to deliver a game. Duke Nukem Forever released in June 2011 after 15 years, and it was an absolute train wreck of a game, with outdated humor, awful graphics and overall terrible gameplay.

2. Daikatana

Daikatana had the makings of an incredible game. John Romero, the lead designer of the infamous Doom was a household name in the gaming world. After leaving id Software, he formed his own company in 1996, Ion Storm, along with former id Software designer/ programmer Tom Hall. Daikatana was Romero’s baby, and had planned to release in within a year of setting up his new studio. Daikatana wasn't released until 2000 and to predominantly negative reviews. The game looked horribly outdated because it ran on the Quake 2 engine, which had been eclipsed by the Half Life 2 engine. It needed to sell 2.5 million copies to be profitable, It sold 40,351 copies and we never really talked about Romero again.

1. ET: The Extra-Terrestrial

This story is so infamous there have been countless articles, YouTube videos and even a documentary about. There is plenty freely available that goes into much more detail but here is a quick snapshot of the story. It was June 1982, and Atari wanted to cash in on the success of Stephen Spielberg's "E.T" and needed a game done by Christmas…CHRISTMAS!!! Atari's CEO hired programmer Howard Scott Warshaw and offered him $200,000 plus an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii if he could make an entire "E.T" game in five weeks….and he did. He produced one of the worst video games of all time. Millions of copies went unsold and hundreds of thousands of them were returned to retailers. While the game itself might have only cost $200,000 (about $553,000 today), Atari spent about $22 million to get the rights which is where the dramatic financial loss occurred.

An interesting and varied list. There have been many flops over the years, but E.T will forever be teh king of gaming flops.

Game on firends

GGWP

/blog/etro-gaming-a-nostalgic-exploration-of-classic-games-their-influence-on-modern-gaming-and-the-current-resurgence-of-retro-gaming-culture/
etro-gaming-a-nostalgic-exploration-of-classic-games-their-influence-on-modern-gaming-and-the-current-resurgence-of-retro-gaming-culture
Retro gaming is a term used to describe playing classic video games on vintage gaming consoles or modern devices with emulators.
