We make some of the best gaming t-shirts out there, covered in phrases, acronyms and phonetic spelling but what do all of those letters mean?

Well, whether you are a parent looking to understand what the hell your kids are saying or a gamer who has no idea what they are typing and is just too embarrassed to ask anyone, we got you covered - from AFK to EZ (just note this list is not in alphabetical order, or any sensible order for that matter).

Here is a list of the most common gaming and e-sport acronyms, terminology and phrases out there.

GG - Good Game

Probably the most famous is GG which stands for Good Game. Typically typed at the end of a match to signify the game has ended. GG is also used in games like DOTA2 and StarCraft to show when a side concedes defeat.

WP - Well Played

Also said at the end of a game, WP (Well Played) is a positive acronym to congratulate the other team on a win. Positivity.

EZ - Easy

EZ (Easy) is usually used in a derogitory manner, like saying the other team is not very good and it wasn’t even a competition.

You can then combine these, and write GGWP or GGEZ…I am sure you can figure out what they mean.

GLHF - Good Luck, Have Fun

GLHF or Good Luck, Have Fun, is said at the start of a game to the other team, everyone starting the game in a positive way. It rarely ends in the same positive manner.

REKT - WRECKED

REKT is typed to the other team when they have been dominated, destroyed or embarrassingly killed. Rubbing it in their face.

NOOB

A noob is someone who is new or inexperienced. Usually used as an insult to tell the opponent that they are shhhhhhhhh…..not very good.

PWN

PWN or PWNED is used to say you ‘owned’ someone, or you dominated them.

AFK - Away From Keyboard

Away from keyboard (AFK) means that you need to step away from the computer. Most of the time someone is going to the toilet.

OP - Over Powered

OP (Over Powered) is used to describe a hero, ability or item that is stronger and gives that player an unfair advantage.

Buff/Nerf

Buffs and nerfs are changes to a character or weapon in patches that make them better or worse. If a character is OP, players may call for them to be nerfed (make them worse), or for other characters to buffed (make them better) until everyone is equal.

IRL - In Real Life

IRL (or RL) is said to differentiate when you are talking about something outside of the game, to avoid confusion.

Poggers (it’s a Twitch thing)

Poggers is used to describe a sense of enthusiasm, happiness or excitement over something. Twitch streamers have their own language…

Gank

It almost sounds dirty, but it’s not. Gank describes when one team uses a number advantage to take control or kill an opposing player, usually a surprise attack. Popular in League of Legends and DOTA 2 when a jungler joins a lane to get the kill.

Ping

Ping is the network latency between the players computer and the game server. Low ping means smooth gaming, high ping means lag and a lot of cursing.

LAG

Lag refers to a low input response in a game usually due to a poor internet connection. When you have lag the game may stutter, and there is a noticeable gap between when you it a button and when the action occurs on screen. Lag ruins games.

RageQuite

This is when someone gets so enraged during a game that they stop playing and leave.

Stomp

A stomp is a one sided game. One team totally dominates the other side.

Smurf

Smurfs are monsters, like IRL monsters. Smurfs are highly skilled players who make a secondary account to play against low skilled players (or noobs), with 2 main objectives: first to simply dominate and demoralise other players, or second, to boost another player. Don’t be that guy.

Boost

Boosting is the act of high skill players either playing a low skilled players account or creating a low level account to play along side a low level player in order to level up (or boost) that account quickly. It is cheating, basically.

Not an exhaustive list, but a good introduction for you noobs out there (see what I did there?) Come to think of it, we haven’t made t-shirts for some of these phrases, need to talk to the designers….BRB.

PS. BRB stands for ‘Be Right Back’, used in case you need to go AFK for a quick second. This is an oldie, came from text speech when you used to have to pay per character. Kids nowadays will never understand.

PSS.
