It is no secret that we love video games, so much so we create gaming clothing for a living, but that love comes from years of experiences in the gaming world.

One side of that is the emotions felt when gaming, from dizzying highs to crashing lows, and not just winning and losing in some infuriating MOBA, but more so the emotions felt through an immersive story. A story that takes you with it. A story so good that gameplay becomes secondary to the emotional rollercoaster you are currently riding.

Here is a list of our top 5 saddest gaming moments, subjective maybe but you have a heart of stone if you didn’t feel anything.

Also, possible spoilers if you haven’t played these and were planning to, but these games have been around a while now.

Gears of War 2 - Dom Finds Maria

"Gears of War? WTF? Really" I hear you shout. I know it’s odd, but play the second one and see. Unlike some of the other games that centre on emotion, the Gears of War franchise leans more towards gore, blood and locust genocide. Gears of War 2’s story does not leave you crying out for your Mommy but its has its moments. Imagine you lost someone, the love of your life. The only thing keeping you going, making you fight is finding that person. Days, months and years pass and you always keep that hope alive. You have literally fought through armageddon with the hope and determination to find her, the only thing you have ever loved. Dom spends all this time looking for his wife…and he finds her.

How they play this scene is perfect, you see through the hopeful eyes of Dom, until you really see through the eyes of Dom. It hits like a ton of bricks, literally saying ‘I don’t now what to do’…then the infamous walk away.

Red Dead Redemption - John Martson’s Death

Red Dead is a great game in so many ways. Music, gameplay, characters, graphics are all good. But this game has a big, impactful ending. For the entire game you lead the protagonist, John Marston, on a journey. We do right and we do wrong, and we cross the thin blue line on multiple occasions. Nearing the final hours of the game however, John seeks atonement for his sins. He looks to right his wrongs, protect his family and just do the best he can do in a harsh and cruel world. This atonement is not enough in the old ways of the wild west.

Sometimes no matter how good you try to be, your past just catches up to you.

Trouble nears the Marston ranch and John packs his son and wife onto a horse, kisses them goodbye and tells them he loves them. The pacing is perfect as John opens the barn door and is faced with a line of rifles.

What works very well here is that Rockstar let you fire a few rounds, almost like a glimmer of hope in the cruel eyes of death, but the ending is set in stone. This is an impactful ending to a game, there are many hours of gameplay in RDR and you put in some work, and for all this to come to a bloody end is hard to take. In saying that, it lead to Red Dead Remption 2, which is awesome.

To the Moon

Ok, not so much a moment but this game is so short it could nearly pass as a moment.

For those of you who have not played this, please do. It wastes no time, does not even let you take control of a character and it kicks you in the gut. It is an immediate and cold realization that there is little hope for a happy ending. Throughout the game there are many moments of beautifully dark subtlety, and then not so subtle moments.

The opening of The Last of Us sees Joel trying to escape the zombie pandemic with his daughter Sarah in his arms.
