Some visuals have become synonymous with games throughout our lives, more often than not it is a character (think Scorpion in Mortal Kombat) but other times the logo used for a game or console is etched into our brain. It becomes iconic, so much so you will never forget it or are even prepared to wear it (or you can look at our gaming clothes which are not licensed merchandise and don’t celebrate any game in particular).

Here is our list of the top 10 gaming logos out there.

10. Atari

First Launched in 1972, Atari is the birth of the home gaming console. The mother of consoles. The logo was created by George Opperman and he has said the the 3 lines represent an ‘A’ and also draw attention to the consoles most popular games, Pong. The bats on either side and the dividing court line in the middle.

What’s great about the Atari logo is not only its infamacy but the fact it has stood the test of time. Even though the company is no longer around the logo is still recoginsable and you will still see it used today. I would definitely wear this on a t-shirt!

9. Doom

The Doom Logo is quite simply fit for purpose. Doom introduced the world to a new genre of first person shooters in 1993, and as well paving the way for a plethora of FPS games, it also has gone from strength to strength itself. The original logo was illustrated by the late sci-fi artist Don Punchatz and its combinations of organic and mechanical elements perfectly reflect the hellscape of the much-loved game. The font is bold, angular and screams heavy metal- nice.

8. Half Life

Half life and Half Life 2 are widely regarded as some of the best games of all time, and its logo follows suit. Half-Life’s Lambda logo is notorious amongst gamers and it is not only the game logo but a symbol used in the Half-Life universe itself. Outside of Half-Life the Lambda symbol is used throughout mathematics and science. It is a letter in the Greek alphabet, in maths and computer programming it used to denote anonymous functions, in physics it is used to denote wavelengths of light or sound and in nuclear physics the Lambda symbol is used to indicate the radioactivity decay constant. SCIENCE BITCH. Oh, and it is also used as the ‘A’ in the Half-Life logo.

7. Dota 2

Dota 2 is one of the most popular MOBA games out there, and to this day has the highest prize pool for for a e-sports tournament ever. The logo is somewhat of a lesson in how logos should be done. Simple, recognisable and portrays an important and staple part of the game - the map. Radiant on one side, dire on the other and the dividing line (the river) between the two sides. Add in the slightly decayed effect to the icon representing the battle between the sides (or the general toxic nature of the game). It is not overly complicated or trying to be clever, Instantly recongisable, a win in logo design.

6. Pac-Man

The origins of Pac-man are somewhat in dispute. It is said the name comes from the onomatopoeia for ‘gobbling’ and the word for a pizza missing a slice. Whatever the origin, the Pac-man logo is exactly what is needed for a classic arcade game. It is loud, stylised and impactful. You would definitely spot it from across the arcade. The wordmark uses the infamous yellow from the character, the ‘C’ is in the shape of Pac-man himself and the strategically placed dots in the ‘P’ and ‘A’s mimic the dots that are eaten in the game.

5. Wipeout

Wipeout is a futuristic. anti-gravity racing game that was originally released as a European launch title for the Sony Playstation back in 1995. Players competed in a racing league set in 2052, complete with music from the likes of the Chemical Brothers (because that is what 2052 will sound like). The Wipeout logo is one of the more clever ones out there. At first glance it looks like an over-stylised futuristic font but the Wipeout logo is made entirely from a cut-up number 8. The pieces are all aligned differently to spell out the name of the game. Even the dot on the top of the 'i' is formed from the negative space in the number 8. The design was intended as a reference to the segmented numbers in LCD stopwatches and timers. The logo even includes time indicators for minutes and seconds, ' and ".

4. Skyrim

Primarily known as the logo fro Skyrim, the dragon crest is actually used throughout the Elder Scrolls titles over the years. It is the main symbol for the Imperial Faction, titles the ‘Seal of Akatosh’. The symbol represents the Empire’s undying strength and its ability to withstand the passage of time (something teh logo does quite well. The crest is modeled after Akatosh, teh father of the Dragon Gods and The God of Time. The Skyrim logo is clean and instantly recognisable. It is a logo that looks as good on a shield as it does on a t-shirt.

3. Portal 2

Portal 2 is just an astounding game. It is fun, different and hilarious. Glados is a queen. The inventiveness of the game is somewhat a juxtaposition to the logo. Although few variations exist of the Portal 2 logo, it is its simplicity that we love. A simple sans-serif font with a playful icon. It does exactly what it it says on the tin, a character entering and exiting a portal in the infamous orange and blue Portal colours. Not only t-shirt worthy, but tattoo worthy as well.

2. Minecraft

Everyone loves Minecraft, and why wouldn’t they? It has something for all ages. Building, crafting, exploring, fighting, farming - you name it, Minecraft can do it! The logo is a perfect representation of the game. It clearly and cleverly reflects the building nature of the game, with a font set it the cobblestone block style. Plus, there's a sneaky insertion of a Creeper face in the letter 'A' (Creepers are enemies that attack you in the game by exploding near their target - for all you Minecraft noobs).

1. Gamecube

As a designer, I subjectively put this at number 1. I know so many will disagree but I did anyway. The Gamecube logo is a masterclass, and if I was a betting man, I would say it has been copied many times since it release. The logo is timeless and clever. The overall shape is (you guessed it) a cube, which is in the name and also the exact shape of the console itself. There is also a cube on the very inside, it starts and ends with a cube. The outer line forms the letter ‘G’ and the inner negative space creates the letter ‘C’. The Nintendo Gamcube logo is a triumph of geometric forms, starting with the lettering and finishing with teh emblem. It is modern, bold, confident and works perfectly.

What gaming logos are etched in you brain?
