Pre-internet, before online toxicity and even had to play un-saveable games, that’s right, no SSDs, hard drives or memory cards. Throughout this time there have been a plethora of myths, rumours and legends about video games, from naked protagonists to secret bosses. So lets dive in to those top 10 myths that, sadly, were just not true.

10. Diablo - The Secret Crow Level

The original Diablo takes place in the small village of Tristram, which contains an old church that ends up being a multi-level dungeon that leads to Hell itself. Along with the hell-church, there are a few crows scattered around the place. Blizzard loves including little details to amuse people, if you click on a cow, it will moo - crazy stuff - but click on it enough, the moo can become slightly aggravated. From something as simple as this came one of the most infamous Blizzard myths, the legend of the Secret Cow Level. It’s unclear how the myth began, but it became an accepted belief that somewhere in Tristram was a way to access some sort of hidden level, that could only be unlocked by clicking on the cows in some way. Blizzard repeatedly denied its existence in any and all of their games while continuing to reference the myth wherever they could (“There is no cow level” is both a Starcraft cheat and a loading screen tip in World of Warcraft). In Diablo II, the Secret Cow Level became reality, as a hidden level full of angry, weapon wielding cows that could be accessed by players who had completed the game.

9. GTA: San Andreas - Finding Bigfoot

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas had a long standing myth that you could find the hairy giant known as Bigfoot. The rumour was that you could spot the mythical creature by wandering the forested mountain areas of the game at night, which is a lot harder than you’d think because those sections of the game were gigantic. However, dedicated players spent hours combing the woods for the mythical Sasquatch, but were eventually forced to declare the entire thing a hoax. Just like in real life! Eventually, one of the developers stepped forward and admitted that Bigfoot could not be found in the game. In steps the modding community, who found a way to insert Bigfoot into the PC version of the game, everything comes full circle.

8. Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Assemble the Triforce

The Triforce is the central symbol of the Zelda series, and often finding it is a central part of the plot, which is probably why this rumor started and persisted. In Ocarina of Time, the Triforce is mentioned often enough that it seems like assembling it should be something that you do as part of your journey. This was the general consensus and there were screenshots, theories, and walkthroughs that had players trying all sorts of insane strategies in order to unlock the hidden object. Despite the Triforce being central to the plot, there is no way to acquire it in this particular game, and Nintendo has said as much themselves. It was interesting seeing the ridiculous lengths people would go to looking for it, though.

7. Street Fighter 2 - Sheng long

In Street Fighter II, winning fighters would taunt their defeated opponents with a variety of boastful phrases - trash talk as it is more commonly known. Due to a mis-translation, one of Ryu’s lines was “You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance”. As a result, the legend of Sheng Long was created, supposedly a hidden fighter in the game. Gaming magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly perpetrated this cruel hoax on the public as part of an April Fool’s joke, when they ran an article that detailed the character and offered the secret to unlocking him. The Internet was still in its infancy, and people weren’t yet used to every website on the planet running fake news (April Fool’s joke or otherwise). Eventually, Sheng Long’s legend was turned into reality, as he was included in Street Fighter IV, using the name Gouken.

6. Pokemon - Mew Under A Truck

Remember when there were only 151 Pokemon? No? That is because you re young and I am old. Back in the day, when the only Pokemon games were Red and Blue, Mew was the rarest Pokemon on the planet. The legendary Pokemon from which Mewtwo was cloned, the only legitimate way to have one in your game was through a code that was only handed out at Nintendo promotional events. Of course, nobody believed that Nintendo would deliberately make it impossible to own every single Pokemon, and so rumours sprang up about how to find Mew inside the game, so you could add it to your collection. The most popular one involved a certain truck in Vermillion City, and allegedly required a Pokemon that could use Surf, Cut, and Strength to move the truck, revealing Mew underneath. Of course, none of this was true. Later, a glitch in the game was discovered that actually would allow you to find and capture Mew, but it had nothing to do with moving a truck.

5. Super Mario 64 - Play as Luigi

Considered by many to be one of the best Mario games of all time, and also one of the best Nintendo 64 games, Super Mario 64 was a stand out of its time. Strangely enough, Mario’s brother Luigi was absolutely nowhere to be found. Fans didn’t accept this, and the idea that you could unlock the Luigi began to make the rounds. A plaque in the main castle courtyard stating “L is real 2041” spread the myth that Luigi could be acquired by gathering every coin in the game (it was said that there were exactly 2041 coins, in reality, there were far more than that). Of course, none of that was true, Luigi is not in the game…but he did get his own launch game for Nintendo’s next console, the Gamecube, which did let you play as Luigi…but not Mario. Criss-Cross.

4. Diablo 2 - The Chat Gem

The greatest mysterious object to ever exist in video games, the Chat Gem was exactly what it sounds like, a small gem that was part of the UI for the Diablo II online chat room. You could click it, and the words “Gem Activated” and “Gem Deactivated” would appear in your chat window. But occasionally, if you clicked it often enough, the words “Perfect Gem Activated” (or, sometimes, “Moo”) would show up instead. Rumours and ideas spread fast about how this affected the game, from increasing your chance of getting better magic items, to raising the difficulty of the monsters, to, of course, opening the Secret Cow Level. In reality, the gem did nothing, and was just Blizzard screwing with players.

3. Final Fantasy 7 - Revive Aeris

This one hurt me personally. Still one of the greatest games I have ever played (the original, forget the remake). Spoilers for those who have not played Final Fantasy 7 but Aeries (or Aerith) dies and it is not easy to take. Not only is it impactful to the story but she has items, materia and is the best dam healer you have. You have spent time levelling her up and making her a staple in your team. The fact Aeris has an ultimate weapon and a level 4 Limit Break, fueled the rumour that she could be brought back. The rumour was so prevalent that it was even address in the official strategy guide, but as stated in this guide, there is no way to bring her back. Aeries is gone friends, she is gone.

2. Tomb raider 2 - Nude Lara Croft

For as long as female lead characters have existed, perverts have wanted to see them naked. This was never more true than the infamous Tomb Raider 2 myth that you could in fact see Lara Croft naked. This myth spread like wild fire, which was impressive because this game was before every household had internet, so not only did the rumour reach far and wide, the developers couldn’t do much to stop it. As most of you (now fully grown) adults realise, it wasn’t true and there was no way to see Lara naked. The good news is that everyone has the internet in their pocket and there are plenty of ways for you to see Lara Croft naked if that is still what you are into.

1. Blowing on Cartridges

This one transcends games as a whole, and even consoles. Nintendo and Sega players believed that if a game wasn’t working, then blowing on the cartridge would fix it. Where this myth came from nobody knows, but it was common practice. It has since be revealed that the moisture from your breath actually did more harm than good. So, blowing on the cartridge actually did nothing, except force you to take put and put in the cartridge over and over until eventually it was inserted correctly and it worked. So in a round-a-bout way, it worked!

There you have it, 10 video game myths that were just that, myths.

Game on friends
GGWP

It is St. Patricks Day and to celebrate we are taking a look at our 5 favourite Irish gaming characters.
