Like you are watching something unfold but you have some control over it. Here is our list of the top 10 video games that feel like movies.

We are not just all about gaming, we love movies too. There are some games out there where either the story itself or the game mechanics make it feel more like a movie. Like you are watching something unfold but you have some control over it. These games tend not to be for the gun-slinging, adrenaline junkies out there. They are slower paced and make you want to take your time.

Here is our list of the top 10 video games that feel like movies.

10. Detroit: Become Human

One of those games where your choices affect the outcome. This idea immerses you in the game, when you know your choices impact the ending you tend to take more time to consider those choices. Detroit: Become Human has great cutscenes and storyline where three interconnected stories play out and your decisions influence each part.

9. Life is Strange

Life Is Strange is an interesting game for many reasons. It is part character drama, part detective mystery and part sci-fi adventure and is oddly engrossing. It tells a cohesive story of loss, regret, choice. The story packs a narrative punch, and ultimately succeeds on delivering an emotional journey. It is unique and well worth a play.

8. The Wolf Among Us

Do you like fairytales? Well have we got the game for you! In this story you play the Big Bad Wold in an episodic mystery-adventure style game that has become Telltale Games trademark. Played out in 5 episodes you investigate a series of murders as you come across all your favourite fairytale and folklore characters. It is fun, and the episodic nature makes it feel more like TV than a game.

7. Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is a cinematic psychological thriller that plays out somewhat like a point and click game. Action sequences are quick time events where you are met with buttons to press to play out the scenario. The story is the highlight of this game. A young boy goes missing and you take control of 4 characters who do not know each other but are connected, and this is slowly revealed as you the story unfolds. Every decision you make has consequences, deciding who lives and who dies.

6. Quantum Break

Consisting of 5 gameplay acts and four fast paced episodes of live-action TV show style gaming, Quantum Break is a unique experience. It opens, as all sci-fi stories do, with a major lab incident that brings forth a potentially world ending fracture in time and then imbues the protagonist and the antagonist with time bending powers. From start to finish, this game plays like an episodic TV show, its fast paced with a great story and will really scratch that itch for those looking for a both immersion and action.

5. Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid on the original Playstation has (graphics aside) stood the test of time for its style, story and originality. Hideo Kojima presented the world with a masterpiece of its time. The game heavily relies on stealth which allows you to immerse yourself in the game. The game has plot twists, character development and some crazy interactions that were never done before - Mantis moves the controller with his mind! It proves that gameplay does not have to come second, it can sit along side a good story and technical mastery.

4. LA Noire

LA Noire brings the golden age of Hollywood to life in the dark, crime thriller. It is a detective game, you have to go to crime scenes, look for clues, examine bodies and chase down leads. It also squeezes in car chases and shootouts. But the truly unique aspect of LA Noire is that, much like a poker player looking for tells, you need to analyse faces and bodily ticks throughout the game. You need to then decide how to continue questioning people based on your reads. For example, if you say a witness is lying, you need to back it up with evidence. The game is a few years old now, but still has many unique aspects.

3. Firewatch

If you have never heard of Firewatch then you probably don’t read many gaming blogs. This game pops up on lists all the time. It is quite a unique game. You play as Henry who starts a new job as a fire lookout in a National Park. A seasoned lookout, Delilah, is the only other voice you hear at the other end of a walkie-talkie. On the surface it does not sound like much but you get dragged into a wonderfully told story and stunning visuals.

2. The Stanley Parable

It is a game that defies description because there isn’t a whole lot like it out there. It is like someone took a ‘choose your own adventure’ book, made it into a movie, then adapted the movie to a video game. The game rewards curiosity and exploration, the more you play through the more interesting it becomes. Ultimately, The Stanley Parable is a walking simulator narrated by a witty British man who makes jokes at your expense and just when you think it is over, it isn’t. Go play it, trust me.

1. The Last of Us

Is it any surprise with the incredible new series? The Last of Us proves that movie adaptations of games can work if done right. Two characters, an adult and a child, with post-apocalyptic despair surrounding them. It is a truly heart-wrenching story that shows glimmers of hope and relentlessness. The Last of Us is a remarkable experience from start to finish and, to this day, one of the best games ever made. That explains why it has had a Part 2, remaster, remake and a TV adaptation (one of the best game to TV adaptations ever). It will renew your faith in humanity, rip it away from you and then make you question if it is even worth having emotions at all.

All games to get lost in and enjoy from a unique perspective. There are many more movie-like games out there, maybe we will make another list….or will we?

Game on friends

GGWP

What are the most played online games right now.
